A major demand is expected from the United Nations to deal with climate change

Rome: In order to deal with climate change, the United Nations is expected to demand that Western countries, including the United States, reduce meat consumption.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has announced that the organization will issue guidelines regarding global food proposals during the COP28 Climate Summit to be held in Dubai.

In a first-of-its-kind document, the body will call on countries to limit excessive meat consumption to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The agency is expected to issue guidelines that will help farmers adapt to inclement weather and reduce emissions from food waste and fertilizer.

According to statistics, US agriculture contributes only 1.4 percent of global emissions and 10 percent of total greenhouse emissions.

Kaweeh Zahidi, director of the FAO Office for Climate Change, said that the organization has several solutions to deal with climate change. Solutions such as agroforestry solutions, soil restoration, sustainable livestock or fisheries management can all prove useful for agriculture and food systems.

A study published in Nature Food Journal in 2021 reported that the global food system produces 18 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year, which is one-third of total global emissions. While livestock accounts for about 14.5 percent of emissions.

It should be noted that the United Nations and other agencies have been pushing for a long time to avoid red meat (such as beef or mutton) and adopt a plant-based diet to avoid climate change.
