2000 year old coins found in Mohenjo Daro
LARKANA: Archaeologists in Pakistan have discovered an extremely ancient hoard of copper coins believed to be more than 2,000 years old from the ruins of a Buddhist shrine at Mohenjo Daro.
The coin and the shrine, known as a stupa, are believed by experts to date from the Kushan Empire, a predominantly Buddhist kingdom that ruled the region from about the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. ruled and conquered the Greco-Bactrian Empire founded by Alexander the Great.
The shrine is located amidst the vast ruins of Mohenjo Daro, which is part of South East Pakistan. Its history is around 2600 BC and it belongs to the ancient Indus Valley or Harappan civilization, which is one of the oldest civilizations in the world.
Archaeologist Sheikh Javed Ali Sindhi told Live Science that the stupa was built on top of the desolate ruins of Mohenjo Daro after its fall about 1,600 years ago. Sheikh Javed was part of the team that discovered the coin hoard at Mohenjo-daro when a wall of the ruins collapsed. The team was led by Syed Shakir Shah who is the Director of Archeology at the Mohenjo Daro site.
Sheikh Javed Ali further said that now the coins will be carefully cleaned in the archaeological laboratory.
